Royal date for Royle star

Actress Sheridan Smith of BBC TV's Royle Family mixed it with the real royals when The Earl and Countess of Wessex turned out to watch her latest musical at London's revamped Royal Opera House.

The 18-year-old, who plays Anthony's girlfriend Emma in the hit comedy, was starring in a production of The Kissing Dance at the new Linbury Studio Theatre.

The royal couple also met the Executive Director of the Opera House, Michael Kaiser, who ushered them to their seats with the rest of the 400-strong audience.

The Kissing Dance is an adaptation of She Stoops to Conquer and is a production of the National Youth Music Theatre, of which Edward is president.
